"Trajectory" Louie Van Patten Oil Stick on Panel 24x17in 2014
Why make art?
I don’t make art because “it is the only thing I know how to do.”
I don’t make art because of some kind of persistent whimsical notion that drives me towards expression for its own sake.
I don’t make art so that other people will understand me, but that sounds like a nice byproduct.
I make art because as incomprehensible as it can be, I feel I understand it more than I understand anything else. It is a difficult pursuit that requires a great deal of stubbornness. And yet it is a privilege. Not one granted to you directly, but also not one afforded to all. You give yourself permission, but you must fight for the continued privilege.
There is no glamorous reason I make art. I make it because I can. I make it because I’ve had a few fleeting tastes of what it can be. It is a life pursuit. I make art because of inertia. I don’t know where I am going, but I feel like I’m going somewhere.
Why do you make art?
